Authentic Business: Why Old Marketing Tactics Don’t Work Any More

We are in a new era of business. Things are shifting very fast. A lot of the old marketing techniques simply do not work any more.

I was recently on the phone with a friend who works in the online business management world. She is one of the leaders in that industry and has been doing it for many years.

We were talking about the fact that many business and marketing techniques are just not working anymore and that a lot of marketers are still out there selling them to people. They’re saying, “Yes, do this. Do this. Do this,” but the climate has changed. What worked at one time doesn’t work any more. This new era of business is much more hands-on.

Gary Vaynerchuk talks about this a lot. He puts it well when he says, “It is legacy over currency”. In this new era, the focus is on how to work with people to get the results they need and they want, not simply advocating the tactic of the month. It is about becoming a vessel for change in the world.

The dominant approach used to be very marketing-tactic-centric, and money-centric. It was all about emails and copy. I’m not saying that particular tactics or strategies are bad. I absolutely use many of them and they do work.

However, there is a difference between using a teleclass to “fill your funnel” and because teleclasses are a hot tactic, and using a teleclass to share truly valuable information. Years ago the prevailing model would have been to give no content up front and instead focus completely on selling. Now it’s the exact opposite. The focus now is being of service and providing as much value upfront. It is about being completely transparent and honest, and as generous as time allows.

Another example is the concept of a “niche”; it just doesn’t serve people anymore. A better way to look at it is discovering who needs you most. It used to be all about “positioning”. I now say it’s about forwarding your fingerprint.

In regards to delegation, over the last several years, the paradigm was, “How little can I work and how much I can make?” I think we are finally shifting back from being focused on delegation to being centered on service.

The tide is shifting fast. Some businesses and people don’t yet understand that there is a new dominant paradigm. It’s no longer enough to understand marketing. You have to be the change you want to see in the world to make the marketing actually work. The businesses who fail to take this into account are being left behind.

Unfortunately, many people would rather hide behind their marketing strategies or tactics and be able to blame them for their lack of success, than to get real about themselves and their authentic voice and stories and go out and share them with the world. It can be easier to blame the marketing strategies and systems than to embrace your vulnerability, and to go out willing to share your authentic voice and story every day.

For a while, you could market just about anything and make money relatively easily. Customers caught on and more and more business owners wanted something real behind the marketing. So people who are still marketing without a coherent message, real value, a movement, or “being the change” will ultimately not succeed.

This is a hard truth for a many people because it’s difficult for them to step into their movement. It’s difficult for them to realize that the only thing they really have to sell is who they are. But it can be done. And when it is, it brings a much higher level of intimacy and meaning to building and growing a business.

Don’t Wait Until the Time is Right

Published by Suzanne Evans   |   March 27, 2010   |   No Comments

I often get told that someone is waiting to start their business or one of my programs or make a change when the time is right.  Without being disrespectful, it is laughable.  Laughable for a few reasons: First, to believe that we are actually in that much control.  Second, to believe that there is anything more than just a delay in your destiny is out of integrity.  And third, if you have thought it even for a nanosecond then the time is now.

Accurate thinking will tell you that life is just a series of moments and the more you wait, the more well, you wait.  I know it seems simple, but that’s because it is. I don’t think there is a right time for someone to die anymore than there is a right time for someone to be born.  I don’t think you meditate or ponder the right time to launch a business or get the help you need.

You feel and then do it.

Yep – you might think that can get you in trouble.  Feel it, do it, and don’t think it.  I will tell you the trouble it has gotten me in is the best kind- I was moving forward.  And, so maybe I looked a little foolish or wasn’t quite ready, but the payoff was action.  The reward was no more waiting.

I know some of you are scared…and that’s why it doesn’t seem like the right time.  I feel you.  Fear is the biggest factor in waiting.  Fear will always make you wonder.

So, for those…

Who wanted off my list a while back when I said get off your ass in an email, I wonder why that struck you so deeply?  Have you been sitting on your rear a bit too long?

So, for those…

Who started a program and quit or didn’t follow through, I wonder why you forgot that I believed in you until you could believe in yourself?

So, for those…

Who have blamed others for not making the money they wanted or having the success they desire, I wonder who hurt you that you have not yet forgiven?

So, for those…

Who said next time I will get the support I need, but for now I am not ready, I wonder why you do not see your magnificent possibility?

So, for those…

Who want to change the world, I ask you are you willing to first change YOUR world?

There is only one right time.  And you are living in it as you read this.  At the end of this newsletter go make the boldest decision you have ever made.  This is the right time, and you have my love, confidence, and support.

Do You Know Why You Are In Business?

Published by Suzanne Evans   |   March 24, 2010   |   No Comments

There is a movement inside of you. It might be sleeping, but it is present. We are each born with a movement to make a difference and have an impact and the way we share that becomes our medium. For some they will teach, others coach, some support, or volunteer. I think the greatest tragedy in life is not sharing your movement or your unique ability with others and the world.

From that movement is your deep seated WHY or what I call so that… Why did I want to make a million? It’s just a number. Why do you want 20 clients? It’s just a number. But when you understand your why, your so that, your legacy it no longer becomes a number … it becomes a mission. And when you are on a mission money is easy. I know that might tick some of you off, but it is. It flows. It shows up. Opportunities expand and grow without your hard work.

So, you must get clear.

  • WHY are you in business?
  • WHAT do you want to change?
  • WHAT legacy will your business leave behind? and…
  • FOR WHOM?

In the words of P Diddy, “Don’t chase the paper. Chase the dream”. I have a dream for women and men to have no shame about money. The are empowered by making money because they know they are the global thought leaders in the world that will use that money to create change and positive growth. I want the right people making millions because I know they will make a difference. I know my legacy is to give people the hope of being financially free through their business and the specific formula to get there. I know my legacy is to help make millionaires that have legacies that will share that wealth to live their own abundant lives and share that with others.

  • When you know your WHY – you can ask anyone to work with you. No fear.
  • When you understand your legacy – you are driven to make money. No fear.
  • When you are clear about what you want to change none of this feels like work. No fear.

If you have been struggling with your business or making money (even a little) knowing and owning your legacy will set you free.  You will know your why, understand your legacy, and be clear about what you want to change.

Only Followers Make More Money

Published by Suzanne Evans   |   March 22, 2010   |   1 Comment

Leaders are key in business and motivation, but if you truly want to make money you need to be a follower.  I was thinking of two very special clients tonight who have experienced some very massive success in 6 months.  When Paige and Brian came to me they were barely getting by (and this is NO exaggeration).  They needed help in their business and they needed direction.  From our first session I was pretty tough with them.  But, I also loved them from the first five minutes of our call.  I told them they had to do exactly what I asked them to.  Period.  That’s how I coach.

  • First, they had to come up with the money to coach with me.  I gave them some hard tasks to do that. CHECK
  • Second, they had to change their business focus and niche.  CHECK
  • Next, they had to leave their house and speak to strangers if necessary to get clients immediately.  CHECK
  • They had to have income to fund their business even if it meant a part time job.  CHECK.
  • They needed to listen to my marketing ideas and implement them immediately.  CHECK.
  • Finally, they had to agree to not always understand why I told them to do something, but trust me 100% and do it.  CHECK.

I could go on and on, but the point is they did exactly what I asked them to do every single time I asked them to do it.  They have called me in tears, in cheers, in confusion, and in clarity, but always with an absolute trust and a willingness to follow.  When I was growing my business I did the same:

  • I found a mentor that was patient, loving, and kind – she told me what to do… I did it 100% and grew my business to over six figures.
  • Next, I worked with a marketing master and did the same.  Even in fits of frustration I did everything he said and grew my business to over $300,000.
  • Finally, I worked with my current mentor and again, I humbly agreed to be the best follower to ever be doing exactly what he suggested and I earned 7 figures in revenue.

What I have learned is most people would rather be right than rich. They would rather ask questions than obediently take action.  Are you doing all that is asked of you by your coach and mentor – and I don’t mean most – I mean EVERYTHING?  Because it takes 100% commitment to follow and take action on exactly what they share has worked for them.  Why would you work with someone and then not take their advice and direction?  What does it say about you that you invest (or don’t invest at all) and then ignore the information?

Paige and Brain got it and now they have regular 5 figure months. Being a follower pays off and it keeps paying off.  They emailed me to say they want to renew the current program they are in (it doesn’t even end until July) but they wanted me to know now.

I responded – you will always have a seat at my table.  No reservations needed.

You see followers want to hang out with other followers because they know the key to success.  Thank you, Paige and Brian, for reminding me of what works.  To be a leader you must be a great follower.

Your Legacy is at Stake

——————————-

In this article I will show you the most simple path to marketing your business you may have ever experienced.  When you woke up this morning what did you think first?  What was the first thoughts that ran through your mind? (OK, now we are all human- mine was Nooo! Because the puppy was eating trash- lol) what I mean is when you are finally awake and clear headed.

Everyday I ask- who can I help?  Who can I serve?

You see I am asking this not because I need clients or want to make more money.  I am asking this because my legacy is at stake.  If you know you have a calling or gift to share with the world then your legacy is awaiting you.  How you BE THE CHANGE in this world and how you help and serve will be the lasting impact you leave long after you are gone.  When I am questioned about how marketing and motivation comes easy for me this is the truth in the answer.  LEGACY.

On a daily basis here are my steps to marketing based in ease and grace:

1) Who can I help? Who can I serve? I never awake asking how can I make $10K or where will I get 3 new clients.  Clients and money come when you are in service.  Clients and money come when you are aggressively seeking ways to help.

“You make a living by what you get. You make a life by what you give.” — Winston Churchill

2) Realize there is a difference between wanting to serve and being of service.  Wanting to serve is you are meditating, thinking, and wishing that your gift can touch people.  Being of service is leaving your house, picking up the phone, emailing, and LIVING your service.  Asking people every day to experience your work and grow from your gift.

3) Know that a movement can make waves.  Many of you are waiting and quite frankly failing because you believe someone else’s opinion of you or your movement.  Any movement worth launching will have nay-sayers and negative reactions.  If I stopped every time someone disagreed with me, I would not have a business.  If I quit each time someone told me “I can’t,” I would still be in a meaningless job.  A movement makes waves- YOU have to be willing to ride them.

4) I am a Legacy Maker.  I have been placed on this planet at this time and surrounded by these people to leave a legacy of truth, wisdom, and abundance around money.  I am aware that not all of this will be easy or quick and much of the divine plan will happen in a different way than I envisioned, but I am a legacy maker.  I have a moral obligation to leave a legacy that helps, supports, and heals people long after I am gone.  I am dedicated to my legacy.

5) I am clear that abundance is my birthright.  My life was meant to live in beauty, joy, pleasure, and purpose.  I can have whatever I want because everything I need is present to have it.  Charging little for my services or playing down the beauty of money does not serve me or my clients.  Abundance is all our birthright and money is a vehicle.  It is fuel for my legacy- it supports my best life, but it also allows me to support the best lives of others and have my legacy and impact reach more and be more.

There it is.  I do not market out of some deep desire to quantify opt-in rates and conversions, but because I am dedicated to my legacy.  My legacy is at stake and so is yours.  How will you leave this world?  What will your impact be?  How many people will you reach and serve?  If that is not motivation to market, you may very well be in the wrong business.

Here’s to being the change you wish to see…
